Castelvecchio: La Pieve e l’Oratorio del SS. Rosario

The beautiful Pieve dei Santi Ansano e Tommaso rises up on a hill near the village of Castelvecchio; from here you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the valley. Its first building is estimated in the Langobardic period, on the historical information collected. Looking at the position of the bell tower, detached respect to the curch, it’s supposed to be employed as sighting tower.

The interior of the church, classically oriented, presents three naves and three apsis. Here you can find the Cripta, an intimate space with three lines of columns and two ancient altars; the dayly light comes from a little window, which gives a special atmosphere to the room, suitable for meditation. A legend narrates that S. Ansano used to come just here to pray.

The Oratorio del SS. Rosario is situated in Castelvecchio centre; it’s entirely decorated with Storie della Vergine e di Cristo, painted with the tecnique of buon fresco fiorentino, unknown author, estimated around XVI century.
You can reach the entrance following a little alley, under the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista, where normally the Santa Messa is celebrated. The interior presents three little naves with a wonderful altar, decorated with polychrome plaster and a wooden tabernacle with gold cladding.
